Alternative Treatment Technologies to Open Burning and Open Detonation of Energetic Hazardous Wastes

For decades, open burning and open detonation (OB/OD) have been used to treat/destroy energetic hazardous wastes, such as military munitions, fireworks, and automobile airbag propellants. Compared to available enclosed technologies, OB/OD is an uncontrolled treatment technology. As a result, treatment byproducts are released directly into the environment via emissions of particulates, products of incomplete combustion, and kickout.

EMS researched alternatives to OB/OD and helped EPA document their developmental status, applicability and usage in this report. The goal is to reduce reliance on OB/OD by presenting successfully tested alternatives that can reduce environmental contamination.
