Call for Abstracts
Nanomaterials
Nanomaterials present:
- new opportunities to improve our ability to detect, monitor, control, and clean up environmental pollutants and contaminants
- potential new risks to human health and the environment
This conference follows successful U.S. EPA environmental nanotechnology conferences in Washington, DC (October 2005), and Chicago, IL (September 2006). The scope of this conference has been expanded to take on an international perspective; however, all submitted text is to be written in English and all platform presentations are to be spoken in English.
We requested state-of-the-art abstracts for platform and poster presentations on applications or potential environmental implications of nanotechnology or manufactured nanomaterials. State-of-the-art abstracts may address any phase of the development or investigation continuum from preliminary emerging technologies and studies to small-scale demonstrations and full-scale case studies. Abstracts were sought for the following sessions:
- Water Remediation – applications of nanotechnology to decontaminate surface water or groundwater
- Soil and Sediment Remediation – applications of nanotechnology to decontaminate soil or sediments
- Water Pollution Control – applications of nanotechnology to treat water prior to release to the environment or release into drinking water distribution systems
- Air Pollution Control – applications of nanotechnology to treat emissions prior to release to the environment or to purify indoor air
- Nano-enabled Sensing – nanotechnology applications to improve environmental contaminant or pollutant detection
- Environmental Fate & Transport – migration, transformations (biotic and abiotic), and sinks of nanomaterials in the physical environment from the point of environmental release to the point of biological exposure or long-term stable abiotic residence
- Biological Exposure – nanomaterial bioavailability, biological uptake (and barrier) mechanisms, biotic migration (organismal, cellular, and subcellular), internal biological transformations, bioaccumulation, and food chain transfer
- Toxicity – biological effects of nanomaterials including mechanisms of toxicity, modes of action, biotic sensitivities and vulnerabilities (ecosystem through molecular), and dose-response relationships
Abstracts were to be 400 words or less and can be for either platform or poster presentations; however, due to the limited time slots for platform presentations, some qualified platform submissions were accepted for poster presentation. The abstract title, author names and affiliations, and contact information (email and street addresses and telephone number) for one author are to be included but will not count as part of the 400-word limit. Abstracts received by the due date were reviewed for currency, technical merit, and relevance to the workshop.
A biography of 200 words or less for each author were to accompany every abstract.
All abstracts, biographies, manuscripts, and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations were to be submitted electronically in the provided secure areas of the conference website. Abstracts, biographies, or manuscripts longer than their respective 400-word, 200-word, and 3-page (12-point font) limits were edited by the conference planners to comply with the word and page limits.
Deadline Timetable:
| Abstract & biographies¹ submission | June 1 | |||
| Notification of abstract acceptance and platform/poster categorization | July 1 | |||
| Draft manuscript submissions (platforms & posters) | August 15 | |||
| Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (platforms only) | September 1 | |||
| Interim final² manuscripts (platforms & posters) | September 15 | |||
¹ Biographies associated with accepted abstracts will be included in the conference proceedings book.
² The conference proceedings editors reserve the right to make editorial and format changes to the submitted biographies and manuscripts to provide consistent style, grammar, and presentation throughout the proceedings book. No changes to substantive content will be made by the editors. After the conference proceedings are assembled, authors will be provided an opportunity to review and modify their manuscripts and biographies before the proceedings book is finalized and goes to press.
